Raising Kane: The Legacy of a Mother
Mother’s Day was yesterday and it made me reflect on motherhood. Four years ago, I became a mother and I was outright scared and jumpy. I remember rushing to the phone everyday calling my Golden Girls (My Grandmother & 2 Great Aunts) asking for tips. I also remember turning to my mother who lived with us when I first had Kane.
Soon I was able to stand on my own two feet and become more comfortable with parenting. I had found my style and embraced the kind of mom I wanted to be. But I knew that this style didn’t just come out of thin air. The truth is for many of us the first lesson in parenting we will get is from our own. So while I had been moving with my confidence in my decisions, in the back of my mind I knew it came from my mother.
Some things we pick up from parenting are great and that’s why we apply it but there are also things that we find toxic that we refuse to input. When this happens it still shapes our parenting in that we are conscious to avoid those qualities we didn’t like. In order to dive into this I wanted to extend the question to other moms and get insight on if they felt the same.
To take it further, I wanted to interview a mother who I had seen discuss her legacy for parenting and thought she’d be great to kick off the series. Dana Maddox is the Founder of 12th Glow and a Doula based in the city of Philadelphia. She lives with her husband of 10 years and their two kids. Dana talks about her legacy of being a mother and navigating quarantine as an entrepreneur. Take a listen below!
